RARE BOAB NUT FOSSIL - BAOBAB - 80 MILLION YEARS OLD
AMAZINGLY RARE with STEM ATTACHED FOSSIL BAOBAB or BOAB

EXTREMELY RARE MUSEUM QUALITY FOSSILISED BOAB NUT - its RARITY comes from the fact that the STEM is STILL ATTACHED TO THE NUT. (in the USA it is called a BAOBAB, but they are actually different species, and this is DEFINITELY an AUSTRALIAN BOAB NUT) It weighs 1.33 kgs or just under 3 lbs and measures approx 15 cms x 7 cms or 6 x 3 . The heavy weight proves that it is a fossil, and NOT just a dried Boab Nut. It was found on the OODNDATTA TRACK in the Northern Territory of Australia in an old dry salty river bed. Beside the nut was what appeared to be a huge petrified tree. We have contacted several Natural History Museums in Australia and they all agree that it is definitely a fossilised Boab Nut, and that it s age is approx 80 million years old. To find a fossilised plant item with it s stem still attached is EXTREMELY RARE as it would normally have fallen or rotted off over time. Normally Boab Nuts are hard and dry when they fall off the tree, and are often gathered by Australian Aborigines carve patterns on them. Pics 1 and 2 show both sides of the Boab with the stem. Pics 3 and 4 show closer details of the stem. Pics 5 and 6 show what appears to be a small area where the nut may have started to rot, and a smaller area where it s possible something like a beetle has bored into the nut when it was on the tree. This beetle or insect is probably still inside the nut. Pic 7 shows the bottom end of the nut. Pics 8 and 9 show the salt and dirt around the nut that came with it w ...
